Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire
Wychway II is a bespoke Frolic 21 built in the summer of 1998 by the inimitable duo at Creative Marine, formerly of the Secret Boatyard, for the current owners. They chose the smart British racing green hull with solid mahogany decks and a wooden interior. There is a tiller with controls on the port side and seating for six or eight passengers at the very least on either side. An ingenious folding seat on either side of the helm bench enables two more passengers and there is a large table with two fixings in the wooden floor. I particularly love the half canopy in green acrylic canvas with white edging mounted on brass stanchions and matching the buttoned cushions.
The batteries were replaced in 2019 - 8 x 6 volt heavy duty lead acid accompanied by a Zivan charger and a replacement 1.3 KW motor. The BSS expiry is 27/06/2027.
During the summer months the owners kept the boat on their home mooring moving it on its own trailer into their garage for the winter. The hull is in good condition with no sign of deterioration but the decks are in need of stripping back to bare wood, recaulking and revarnishing. Hence the boat is very keenly priced to incentivise a new owner to have the margin to take the boat to a professional for the renovation. All cushions, canopy etc are in excellent order.
Wychway II was a regular site on the reach of the Thames below Hambleden Lock. The house is being sold and so the boat has to go to be replaced by something smaller.
The Frolic 21 electric launch was the most popular of all the models created by the Steam and Electric Launch Company in the nineteen eighties and nineties when it was shown at boat shows abroad. Over the years it has remained popular both for commercial and private use. Indeed it is still built by Landamores in Norfolk as they bought the mould tools from Creative Marine.
Seemingly timeless this Edwardian contemporary classic never dates but delights with its elegant lines and stealthy electric propulsion.
